Towards an HIV-Free Future: BioInformatiCo Partners with the BRILLIANT Consortium
The response to HIV has come a long way since the peak of the epidemic in the 1990s. Year on year, there have been reductions in new infections and mortality as well as increases in HIV treatment coverage. Despite significant progress, HIV remains a serious global health threat, particularly in Africa. The African continent bears the heaviest burden of the virus, with millions infected and AIDS-related illnesses claiming countless lives each year.
This is why BioInformatiCo is proud to announce our partnership with the BRILLIANT Consortium, a USAID-funded Cooperative Agreement dedicated to accelerating HIV vaccine discovery and development in Africa. This collaboration between African scientists and institutions, led by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), is a significant milestone in the fight against HIV.
The Impact of HIV in Africa
The African continent has been disproportionately affected by HIV. In 2022, an estimated 25.6 million people on the continent were living with the virus, 660,000 acquired the virus and about 380,000 people died from HIV-related causes [1]. While there have been some positive trends, with Eastern and Southern Africa showing a decrease in new infections and deaths since 2000 [2], HIV remains a serious public health threat in the region. Of the 1.3 million people who were newly infected with HIV globally in 2022, almost 40% were in Eastern and Southern Africa [2]. This threat is particularly acute for women and adolescent girls, who make up a staggering 63% of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa in 2022 [2].
South Africa has the largest HIV epidemic in the world [3]. In 2022, the country had the highest number of HIV cases globally (7.6 million), the highest recorded AIDS-related deaths (45,000) and the third-highest prevalence rate (17.8%) [4].
These statistics paint a grim picture, but they also underscore the urgency of finding a safe and accessible HIV vaccine. As Paloma Adams-Allen of USAID states, “African scientists and institutions must be at the forefront of designing and testing HIV vaccine candidates” [5].
Global Funding Paves the Way for Progress
Organisations like UNAIDS, the Global Fund and PEPFAR play a vital role in financing HIV programs around the world. UNAIDS reported that in 2022, US$20.8 billion was allocated to HIV programs in low- and middle-income countries [6]. However, funding shortfalls threaten progress, as evidenced by the recent decrease in global investment. Increased international and domestic support is critical for ensuring access to HIV treatment and prevention services, and for continued investment in vaccine development.
South Africa: A Leader in HIV Clinical Trials
Despite the challenges, there are reasons for optimism. South Africa has emerged as a global leader in HIV clinical trials, a testament to the country’s scientific expertise and commitment to combating the virus. This leadership is not simply a coincidence; it stems directly from the immense burden South Africa carries. With the highest number of HIV cases globally, conducting clinical trials here is not just research – it is a necessity to develop solutions that will have a direct impact on millions of lives.
According to Novotech’s HIV Global Clinical Trial Landscape report, since 2018, South Africa has conducted the fourth-highest number of HIV trials globally, surpassed only by the United States, Russia and Mainland China [7]. This robust research infrastructure positions South Africa at the forefront of HIV vaccine development.
A Milestone in African Research: The BRILLIANT Consortium
In 2022, a key moment emerged in the fight against HIV in Africa. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) awarded a significant grant – up to $45 million over five years – to accelerate HIV vaccine research and development in Africa. This vital funding opportunity, the HIV Vaccine Innovation, Science and Technology Acceleration in Africa (HIV-VISTA) project, was secured through a rigorous competition by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC). Leading the successful grant application was Professor Glenda Gray, President and CEO of the SAMRC, in collaboration with a formidable team of African scientists.
This collaboration, aptly named the BRILLIANT Consortium (BRinging Innovation to cLinical and Laboratory research to end HIV/AIDS In Africa through New vaccine Technology), signifies a critical step towards an HIV vaccine. The BRILLIANT Consortium aims to empower scientists and institutions across sub-Saharan Africa by fostering innovative research and testing methods for improved HIV vaccine candidates.
The BRILLIANT Consortium is a testament to the expertise and commitment of African scientists in tackling this global health challenge. Their success in securing this substantial grant and their dedication to developing a life-saving vaccine offer a powerful message of hope in the fight against HIV.
BioInformatiCo: Contributing to Medical Discovery
BioInformatiCo is proud to be the clinical data management service provider for the BRILLIANT Consortium.
