Shirley Collie
FOUNDER AND CEO
Shirley Collie
As the founder and CEO of BioInformatiCo, Shirley brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for medical science to drive innovative solutions and advancements in the field. With 18 years of expertise as a healthcare actuary, Shirley held the role of Chief Health Analytics Actuary at Discovery Health, where she led the Analytic Intelligence Cluster.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shirley contributed globally relevant research on behalf of Discovery Health, showcasing her commitment to addressing critical health challenges. Shirley has collaborated in academic studies with leading researchers and has published in high impact journals such as The Lancet, NEJM and BMJ. Her deep understanding of administrative healthcare data and epidemiological analytic concepts benefits BioInformatiCo’s reporting to add value to study-teams.
At BioInformatiCo, Shirley aims to advance data management and analytic services in Sub-Saharan Africa by leveraging her expertise to drive meaningful impact in the region. With a clear vision and a pragmatic approach, Shirley is focused on delivering tangible results and fostering growth in the biometrics and analytics landscape. Luke Machowski
HEAD OF TECHNOLOGY
Luke Machowski
Luke Machowski brings over two decades of software architecture and engineering leadership to BioInformatiCo. With a career encompassing complex financial systems, regulatory technologies, and advanced data modelling, Luke has led high-performing teams and delivered scalable technology solutions used by major financial institutions, insurers, and global organisations.
An innovator at heart, Luke is the originator of Nano Version Control – a novel data structure designed to advance explainability, data quality, and automation in AI systems. His work on this and related technologies has been presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals, including collaborations with renowned AI scholar Professor Tshilidzi Marwala.
Prior to joining BioInformatiCo, Luke served as Head of RegTech at Synthesis Software Technologies, where he led the development of sophisticated regulatory and market-facing platforms used across the banking and fintech sectors. His work included architecting secure, high-throughput systems for reporting to local and international regulators, and spearheading innovative tools for real-time market data processing. His work supported a wide range of clients including the JSE, SARS, Investec, and Discovery.
With his strong academic foundation, including a BSc and MSc in Engineering with distinction, Luke is ideally positioned to lead BioInformatiCo’s technology strategy as we advance our mission to deliver robust, compliant and quality clinical data management solutions.
Ricci Kaplan
HEAD OF FINANCE
Ricci Kaplan
Ricci Kaplan is a Chartered Accountant (SA) with over a decade of experience spanning financial management, consulting, and business advisory. Ricci has a proven track record of running full finance functions end-to-end, from management accounts, budgeting, and cash flow management to cost optimisation, financial modelling, and tax compliance.
Beyond reporting, Ricci translates complex financial data into clear insights that support strategic decision-making. Across a range of industries, Ricci has led credit assessments and investment memorandums and designed financial controls and systems that improve operational efficiency. This work has consistently been paired with close partnership with leadership teams to drive growth and profitability.
A qualified CA(SA), Ricci trained at Grant Thornton in Johannesburg and holds a BCom and CTA from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Dr Erica Lazarus
CLINICAL RESEARCH SITE SPECIALIST
Dr Erica Lazarus
Dr Erica Lazarus has worked as an investigator, project director and lead programme manager on clinical trials for almost two decades. She has extensive experience working on drug development trials from Phase 1 to Phase 4. She has worked on multiple ground-breaking clinical trials including the Phase 2b HVTN 703/HPTN 081 study (National Principal Investigator) that provided the first proof that a broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibody can prevent HIV infection, the Sisonke studies that provided the first large-scale access to COVID vaccinations in South Africa and laid the groundwork for establishment of vaccination sites across the country, and the Children with HIV Early Antiretroviral Therapy (CHER) that changed international guidelines for the treatment of infants infected with HIV.
Dr Lazarus has been the principal investigator of multiple pharmaceutical industry studies having worked on studies for HPV vaccine bridging studies for MSD, pediatric HIV treatment for ViiV, and has also served as senior programme manager of infant tuberculosis vaccine trials. She has also been involved in writing, review and publication of related manuscripts.
In addition, Dr Lazarus has a passion for process improvement and experience in applying Lean principles and Rapid Process Improvement both pre-implementation and during study to ensure BioInformatiCo’s database setup supports efficient, high quality trial implementation.
Lizelle van der Linde

Lizelle van der Linde
Lizelle van der Linde is a dedicated Clinical Research Professional. She began her career as a Medical Technologist, spending six years specialising in chemical pathology before moving into the CRO industry. Lizelle has 19 years of in-depth experience in clinical research, filling various positions in data operations and management in functional- and full-service divisions within Global Data Management. Lizelle’s data management experience has spanned the full duration of clinical studies, from study start-up to database lock on various global/multi-national studies (Phase I, II, III and IV). She has been involved in over 30 clinical trials and has significant experience working on various therapeutic areas, systems and database platforms. Lizelle’s background and experience makes her an asset to the BioInformatiCo team.
Dr Robert Kieser
QUALITY ASSURANCE AND COMPLIANCE LEAD
Dr Robert Kieser
Robert Kieser is a medical doctor by training, with experience spanning clinical research and both state and private healthcare. A graduate of the University of Pretoria, Robert furthered his education by completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health and specialised Project Management training through WITS. His academic pursuits reflect his dedication to expanding his skill set and contributing to the field of healthcare.
After practicing clinical medicine in tertiary and rural settings, he commenced his research career at WITS Reproductive Health and HIV Institute. Here he served as an investigator, driving clinical trials aligned with positively impacting maternal and child health.
Robert is intentional about fostering collaborative environments. In a world of complexity, he advocates that the best solution is the simplest one which works.
Dr Annie Joubert
PHARMACOVIGILANCE AND DATA MANAGEMENT LEAD
Dr Annie Joubert
Dr Annie Joubert is a dedicated medical professional with a passion for research. She holds an MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria and a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV Management (DipHIVMan) from the Colleges of Medicine. She has received certification as a Certified Clinical Data Manager (CCDM) by the Society of Clinical Data Managers and has participated in the Global Clinical Scholar Research Training program (GCSRT) at Harvard Medical School. Currently, Dr Joubert is pursuing a Master’s in Pharmacology (MPharmMed) at the University of Pretoria.
Dr Joubert has worked at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Tshwane District Hospital, bringing a deep understanding of healthcare systems to her role as BioInformatiCo’s lead data manager and client services department lead. In addition, at BioInformatiCo, Dr Joubert leads a team of registered nurses who support medical monitors through the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system. Before pivoting to data management, she worked on the Sisonke Safety Desk – the trial which vaccinated over 500,000 healthcare workers against COVID-19 in 2021. She was involved in pharmacovigilance and safety monitoring on the Sisonke 1, Sisonke Boost, SHERPA and BaSis trials.
Dr Joubert’s dedication to her field is evident in her diverse experiences and continuous pursuit of knowledge. Her passion for blending clinical expertise with data management has driven her to excel in roles that bridge the gap between healthcare and technology.
Laurence Sonnenberg

Laurence Sonnenberg
Laurence Sonnenberg graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BSc in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research in 2015. After working as an analyst for some time, where he gained valuable skills in database design and data analytics, Laurence transitioned into the field of Software Engineering.
Since moving into Software Engineering, Laurence has worked on a variety of backend, cloud and mobile projects in languages like Rust, Python, Go, Typescript and Kotlin. The excitement of learning and of how technology can be applied to solve real-world problems is what drives Laurence in his professional life.
Mapaseka Tsepe
CLINICAL QUALITY ASSOCIATE
Mapaseka Tsepe
Mapaseka Tsepe is a University of the Free State graduate, who studied a B.Sc Information Technology. She also has an Honours in Business Management (BSc) from the University of the Free State. Mapaseka joined the Contract Research Organisation (CRO) industry in 2007 and has 17 years of experience in data management. She has worked in various global/multinational Phase II – IV studies on various therapeutic areas (Infectious Diseases and Vaccines, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Pain, Immunology, Cardiovascular and Pediatrics). Mapaseka has fulfilled numerous roles within data management at large CROs, including Senior Clinical Data Associate, Clinical Data Associate, Associate Clinical Data Manager, Senior Clinical Data Coordinator and Clinical Data Coordinator. She has substantial experience in conducting data reviews, discrepancy management, generating data cleaning reports, freezing eCRFs, performing reconciliations, and working with study teams. In 2022, her team won the Clinical Project Team Award for best collaboration. Mapaseka brings almost two decades of clinical data management experience to the BioInformatiCo team, making her a valuable resource.
Dr Chloë Shain
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT LEAD
Dr Chloë Shain
Dr Chloë Shain has a PhD in Anthropology, a BA in Film and Media Production and a Bachelor of Social Science Honours in Anthropology from the University of Cape Town. She also has a BA Honours in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Chloë’s background includes social scientific and qualitative research, academic research, writing and editing, project management, public/community engagement, grant/funding scoping and art & design. Her PhD research involved long-term qualitative fieldwork with TB scientists inside a Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory. She has presented her academic research at local and international conferences and has been awarded prestigious academic scholarships and fellowships, including the National Research Foundation (NRF) Innovation and Priority Research Areas Scholarship.
Chloë has exhibited her artwork at Nirox, Latitudes Art Fair and Turbine Art Fair and has spearheaded art-science community engagement projects in collaboration with the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research, the SAMRC Centre for Tuberculosis Research, Stellenbosch University Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics, the South African TB Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) and the Western Cape Department of Education.
Chloë brings a diverse skillset to BioInformatiCo, where she combines her creative and academic background to contribute to the development of the company.
Pieter Rossouw
PRINCIPAL SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Pieter Rossouw
Pieter Rossouw has over ten years of backend and cloud engineering experience spanning financial services, regulatory technology, logistics, and agritech, with deep fluency across Python, Golang, and Java ecosystems.
He most recently led a Python team on a fully serverless debt review platform for an emerging bank, architected as a scalable event-driven serverless solution.
He is adept at building cloud-native platforms that reconcile business needs with considered technology adoption.
Pieter holds an MSc in Computer Science from North-West University, where he also lectured final-year IT students, and is a strong proponent of secure, privacy-conscious engineering in highly regulated environments.
Maake Mashangoane

Maake Mashangoane
Maake Mashangoane is a senior full-stack developer with over six years of experience in fintech and regulatory technology. He has played a pivotal role in developing regulatory compliance platforms tailored for the South African financial markets, ensuring full alignment with local legislation.
Beyond development, Maake led a team responsible for maintaining and supporting eleven enterprise applications across financial services, agriculture, social responsibility, regulatory reporting, and compliance. His expertise enabled clients to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical, system-level implementations.
Maake’s experience working directly with end-user clients and supporting them throughout the full product lifecycle has given him deep insight into the drivers of user satisfaction. This experience enabled him to build and lead an exceptional team focused on client success management.
Maake combines strong technical knowledge with regulatory insight and client-centric design to deliver scalable solutions that meet real-world compliance demands.
Rebone Kai

Rebone Kai
Rebone Kai is a dedicated professional with a BSc degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, specialising in genetics and human physiology, from the University of the Witwatersrand. He gained experience as a Data Analyst at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, where he fulfilled various functions including DATCOV Digital Platform Administration, troubleshooting and access control. Rebone has experience in validating data at the point of entry, consolidating data files and reporting. He also has experience in SQL, Power BI and M365 administration. Guided by the belief that “Nothing in life was ever achieved by standing still,” Rebone embraces continuous growth and strives for excellence in his field.

Jamie Benater
Jamie Benater obtained her Electrical and Information Engineering degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and graduated at the end of 2022. Throughout her degree, she completed numerous projects relating to Big Data, artificial intelligence and communication systems.
Jamie has since gained extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in machine learning, data science, various programming languages including SQL, python and C++, database programming within EDC (Electronic Data Capture) systems, problem solving and statistical analysis.
Jamie believes that “excellence is a journey, not a destination.”
Masala Nethamba

Masala Nethamba
Masala Nethamba is an Electrical Engineering graduate from the University of Cape Town. While transitioning into software development, Masala has leveraged the analytical and problem-solving skills, mathematics and logical thinking developed during his engineering studies to excel in this new field.
Masala has expanded his skill set since joining the BioInformatiCo team. He has acquired proficiency in SQL, database programming, Docker and Terraform, demonstrating a keen ability to adapt and learn.
At BioInformatiCo, Masala is dedicated to applying his engineering background and newly acquired software skills. His passion for continuous learning and innovation drives him to deliver valuable insights and solutions in clinical research.
Faatimah Mahomed

Faatimah Mahomed
Faatimah Mahomed qualified as an Electrical Engineer from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2023. She also completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree with Honours in Bioethics and Health Law. During her engineering degree, Faatimah was awarded a prestigious bursary from the Power Grids Education Trust, aimed at uplifting and empowering Black South African women in STEM.
Faatimah has since gained practical experience in data science, problem solving and various programming languages including SQL and Python. She enjoys applying her medical research knowledge to data science.
Priyanka Kala
INTERMEDIATE DEVELOPER
Priyanka Kala
Priyanka Kala has completed her Biomedical Engineering degree (2021) followed by an Electrical (Information) Engineering honours degree (2023) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her honours project titled “Investigating Muscle Fatigue Using a Low-Cost EMG Armband: Towards a Low-Cost Bionic Hand” was recently published in the 2024 Proceedings of the Design of Medical Devices (DMD) Conference in the ASME digital collection. Priyanka also has a Bachelor of Architectural studies from the University of Cape Town.
Her interdisciplinary background has fostered a unique blend of analytical and creative problem-solving skills. With her growing interest in the data science and medical spaces, she works towards continuously developing her software skills in these areas to both grow as an engineer and contribute to innovative solutions in clinical trial data management.

Betty Sithole is a dedicated and certified enrolled nurse with a passion for making a difference in healthcare. With four years of experience in drug addiction rehabilitation and emergency care, Betty has developed a deep understanding of patient needs and clinical procedures. She has been working in clinical research and data management, while simultaneously enhancing her skills through developmental training, including GCP certification. Betty was part of the helpdesk for the Sisonke Clinical Trial – the Ad26 COVID-19 Vaccine study which vaccinated 500,000 healthcare workers. At BioInformatiCo, led by Dr Annie Joubert, Betty supports medical monitors through the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system with near real-time safety signal detection. Andile Dube

Andile Dube
Andile Dube is a skilled enrolled nurse trained at Lungile Nursing School. She has expertise in Good Clinical Practice, Data Management for Clinical Research, Microsoft Excel, and WHODrug and MedDRA coding. Andile has a background in clinical settings in the private sector, working in a COVID-19 ward where she provided direct patient care, administered medications, oxygen therapy and supported infection control measures. She also worked in a maternity ward, where she became proficient in antenatal, labour, and postnatal care, including patient education and supporting new mothers. Notably, Andile was a clinical case manager in the Sisonke clinical trial – the Ad26 COVID-19 Vaccine study which vaccinated 500,000 healthcare workers. Andile brings this wealth of experience in clinical settings to her role as an Associate Data Manager, making her sensitive to the clinical trial participant context.

Juliet Rushambwe
Juliet Rushambwe is a data science enthusiast with a background in bioinformatics and big data analytics. She is currently pursuing a Master’s in IT, specialising in Big Data Science at the University of Pretoria, where she has demonstrated academic excellence with multiple distinctions. Juliet holds a BSc Honours degree in Bioinformatics and a BSc in Biochemistry.
Juliet has experience in data analysis, machine learning, and data visualisation tools such as Power BI, as well as proficiency in R, SQL and Python programming languages. Beyond her technical expertise, she is an aspiring leader with mentorship and teaching experience.

Keenan Ikking
Keenan is a data analyst with a background in bioinformatics. Holding an MSc, his research focused on identifying novel therapeutic targets for inflammatory lung diseases. Skilled in analysing complex biological datasets, Keenan has worked extensively with DNA sequencing technologies, benchmarking algorithms, and applying machine learning to extract meaningful insights.
At BioInformatiCo, Keenan brings an eager-to-learn mindset, striving to expand his skill set to tackle data challenges. With a love for puzzles and technology, he is passionate about developing simple solutions to solve complex problems.

Sinovuyo Rasmeni
Sinovuyo Rasmeni is a Molecular and Cell Biology graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand, with an Honours degree specialising in applied bioinformatics. During her studies, she developed a strong foundation in bioinformatics, data analysis, and programming.
Sinovuyo has experience in Python, R, and data analysis. She is interested in software development and its applications in biomedical research. With a passion for leveraging technology to improve healthcare, Sinovuyo brings strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a commitment to learning.

Siyabonga Msipa
QUALITY COORDINATOR INTERN
Siyabonga Msipa
Siyabonga Msipa has an academic background in life sciences and bioinformatics, having completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics and Human Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Cape Town. Building on this foundation, she pursued an Honours degree in Bioinformatics where she developed an interest in computational biology. Currently, Siyabonga is completing a Master of Medical Science in Bioinformatics at UCT with a focus on tumor microenvironment profiling in renal cell carcinoma.
Siyabonga worked as a clinical trial recruiter, during which a profound appreciation for data integrity was instilled in her. She learnt first-hand that accurate and reliable data is paramount not just for regulatory compliance, but for patient safety and advancing effective treatments.
Siyabonga believes that quality is the backbone of reliable research and is excited to contribute to ensuring that every aspect of clinical data management meets the highest standards. Jamie Goldstein

Jamie Goldstein
Jamie Goldstein is a qualified Chartered Accountant (South Africa). She has a degree in Business Science Finance with Accounting from the University of Cape Town (awarded with distinction in Corporate Governance) as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting from UCT. After graduating, Jamie completed her articles at Ernst & Young, where she gained experience in both the retail and financial sectors. Following her tenure at Ernst & Young, she furthered her experience through a remote collaboration with PWC’s Boston office. Jamie has four years of auditing experience and has served as a Senior Audit Consultant for a large company with clients ranging across various sectors. She has comprehensive understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards and International Standards on Auditing. She also has detailed experience in review of annual financial statements, forecasting, cash flow management and compliance testing. Jamie is detail-oriented, highly dedicated and committed to contributing towards the growth and success of the business.

Logan sees good IT support as more than fixing faults; it’s about keeping people working smoothly and making every interaction a genuinely helpful one. He is quick to learn, calm when things go wrong, and committed to reliable, friendly service for both the BioInformatiCo team and its clients.

Prisha Roupsingh

Prisha Roupsingh
Prisha brings over two decades of experience across HR administration, document control, and procurement coordination in demanding engineering and industrial environments.
She has managed HR documentation and employee records across multiple operational sites, run leave administration and payroll support, and coordinated recruitment and employee onboarding from end to end. On the procurement side, she has processed supplier invoices, raised purchase requisitions, and kept compliance documentation and licence exemptions current. Her detailed, deadline-driven work has kept operations running without friction.
Highly organised and known for picking up new systems quickly, Prisha joins BioInformatiCo as Office and Personal Executive Administrator, bringing that same rigour to keeping records, schedules, and administration reliably in order.

Professor Glenda Gray
Professor Glenda Gray is a highly accomplished medical researcher and leader in the field. As the first female President and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), she brings a wealth of experience and expertise. Trained as a Medical Doctor and Paediatrician at the University of the Witwatersrand, Professor Gray co-founded and directed the renowned Perinatal HIV Research Unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Her international reputation stems from her groundbreaking research in HIV vaccines and interventions to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. She is a key figure in the expansion of HIV vaccine research in Africa as the Co-PI of the NIH-funded HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Professor Gray’s contributions have been recognised through numerous awards, including the Nelson Mandela Health and Human Rights Award and the Order of Mapungubwe, the highest honour in South Africa. She was one of TIME Magazine’s most 100 influential people in the world, and she has also been listed by Forbes as one of Africa’s 50 most powerful women. She is a member of prestigious scientific academies and has served on global health boards. Additionally, Professor Gray has played a pivotal role in COVID-19 vaccine trials, demonstrating her commitment to addressing public health challenges. Professor Gray is committed to capacity development in science, with a particular emphasis on fostering diversity and transformation. She has recently been awarded a USAID co-operative agreement to support HIV vaccine discovery in Africa, called the BRILLIANT Consortium (BRinging Innovation to cLinical and Laboratory research to end HIV In Africa through New vaccine Technology).

Mark Collie
Mark is a seasoned financial specialist with a passion for harnessing technology to revolutionise business and societal frameworks. His entrepreneurial journey includes co-founding Airvantage, a fintech company acquired by Blue Label Telecoms Limited in 2017, Sikhona Forex, an international remittance company acquired by Euronet Limited in 2022 and Icon South Africa, responsible for the 2010 FIFA World Cup’s signage and branding.
Prior roles include Operations Director at Wideopen Platform, an outdoor advertising leader sold to Primedia Limited in 2006 and a tenure in private equity with the Buffet Investment Group. Currently, Mark holds diverse private equity interests spanning sectors such as property, technology, education and financial services. He also guides the technology strategy for the E³ initiative, a partnership with the South African Department of Education focused on integrating 21st-century skills into pedagogy.

With 18 years of expertise as a healthcare actuary, Shirley held the role of Chief Health Analytics Actuary at Discovery Health, where she led the Analytic Intelligence Cluster.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shirley contributed globally relevant research on behalf of Discovery Health, showcasing her commitment to addressing critical health challenges. Shirley has collaborated in academic studies with leading researchers and has published in high impact journals such as The Lancet, NEJM and BMJ. Her deep understanding of administrative healthcare data and epidemiological analytic concepts benefits BioInformatiCo’s reporting to add value to study-teams.

Luke Machowski brings over two decades of software architecture and engineering leadership to BioInformatiCo. With a career encompassing complex financial systems, regulatory technologies, and advanced data modelling, Luke has led high-performing teams and delivered scalable technology solutions used by major financial institutions, insurers, and global organisations.
An innovator at heart, Luke is the originator of Nano Version Control – a novel data structure designed to advance explainability, data quality, and automation in AI systems. His work on this and related technologies has been presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals, including collaborations with renowned AI scholar Professor Tshilidzi Marwala.
Prior to joining BioInformatiCo, Luke served as Head of RegTech at Synthesis Software Technologies, where he led the development of sophisticated regulatory and market-facing platforms used across the banking and fintech sectors. His work included architecting secure, high-throughput systems for reporting to local and international regulators, and spearheading innovative tools for real-time market data processing. His work supported a wide range of clients including the JSE, SARS, Investec, and Discovery.
With his strong academic foundation, including a BSc and MSc in Engineering with distinction, Luke is ideally positioned to lead BioInformatiCo’s technology strategy as we advance our mission to deliver robust, compliant and quality clinical data management solutions.

Ricci Kaplan is a Chartered Accountant (SA) with over a decade of experience spanning financial management, consulting, and business advisory. Ricci has a proven track record of running full finance functions end-to-end, from management accounts, budgeting, and cash flow management to cost optimisation, financial modelling, and tax compliance.
Beyond reporting, Ricci translates complex financial data into clear insights that support strategic decision-making. Across a range of industries, Ricci has led credit assessments and investment memorandums and designed financial controls and systems that improve operational efficiency. This work has consistently been paired with close partnership with leadership teams to drive growth and profitability.
A qualified CA(SA), Ricci trained at Grant Thornton in Johannesburg and holds a BCom and CTA from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Dr Erica Lazarus

Dr Erica Lazarus
Dr Erica Lazarus has worked as an investigator, project director and lead programme manager on clinical trials for almost two decades. She has extensive experience working on drug development trials from Phase 1 to Phase 4. She has worked on multiple ground-breaking clinical trials including the Phase 2b HVTN 703/HPTN 081 study (National Principal Investigator) that provided the first proof that a broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibody can prevent HIV infection, the Sisonke studies that provided the first large-scale access to COVID vaccinations in South Africa and laid the groundwork for establishment of vaccination sites across the country, and the Children with HIV Early Antiretroviral Therapy (CHER) that changed international guidelines for the treatment of infants infected with HIV.
Dr Lazarus has been the principal investigator of multiple pharmaceutical industry studies having worked on studies for HPV vaccine bridging studies for MSD, pediatric HIV treatment for ViiV, and has also served as senior programme manager of infant tuberculosis vaccine trials. She has also been involved in writing, review and publication of related manuscripts.
In addition, Dr Lazarus has a passion for process improvement and experience in applying Lean principles and Rapid Process Improvement both pre-implementation and during study to ensure BioInformatiCo’s database setup supports efficient, high quality trial implementation.

Lizelle van der Linde is a dedicated Clinical Research Professional. She began her career as a Medical Technologist, spending six years specialising in chemical pathology before moving into the CRO industry. Lizelle has 19 years of in-depth experience in clinical research, filling various positions in data operations and management in functional- and full-service divisions within Global Data Management. Lizelle’s data management experience has spanned the full duration of clinical studies, from study start-up to database lock on various global/multi-national studies (Phase I, II, III and IV). She has been involved in over 30 clinical trials and has significant experience working on various therapeutic areas, systems and database platforms. Lizelle’s background and experience makes her an asset to the BioInformatiCo team.

Dr Robert Kieser
Robert Kieser is a medical doctor by training, with experience spanning clinical research and both state and private healthcare. A graduate of the University of Pretoria, Robert furthered his education by completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health and specialised Project Management training through WITS. His academic pursuits reflect his dedication to expanding his skill set and contributing to the field of healthcare.
After practicing clinical medicine in tertiary and rural settings, he commenced his research career at WITS Reproductive Health and HIV Institute. Here he served as an investigator, driving clinical trials aligned with positively impacting maternal and child health.
Robert is intentional about fostering collaborative environments. In a world of complexity, he advocates that the best solution is the simplest one which works.
Dr Annie Joubert

Dr Annie Joubert
Dr Annie Joubert is a dedicated medical professional with a passion for research. She holds an MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria and a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV Management (DipHIVMan) from the Colleges of Medicine. She has received certification as a Certified Clinical Data Manager (CCDM) by the Society of Clinical Data Managers and has participated in the Global Clinical Scholar Research Training program (GCSRT) at Harvard Medical School. Currently, Dr Joubert is pursuing a Master’s in Pharmacology (MPharmMed) at the University of Pretoria.
Dr Joubert has worked at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Tshwane District Hospital, bringing a deep understanding of healthcare systems to her role as BioInformatiCo’s lead data manager and client services department lead. In addition, at BioInformatiCo, Dr Joubert leads a team of registered nurses who support medical monitors through the Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system. Before pivoting to data management, she worked on the Sisonke Safety Desk – the trial which vaccinated over 500,000 healthcare workers against COVID-19 in 2021. She was involved in pharmacovigilance and safety monitoring on the Sisonke 1, Sisonke Boost, SHERPA and BaSis trials.
Dr Joubert’s dedication to her field is evident in her diverse experiences and continuous pursuit of knowledge. Her passion for blending clinical expertise with data management has driven her to excel in roles that bridge the gap between healthcare and technology.

Laurence Sonnenberg graduated from Stellenbosch University with a BSc in Applied Mathematics and Operations Research in 2015. After working as an analyst for some time, where he gained valuable skills in database design and data analytics, Laurence transitioned into the field of Software Engineering.
Since moving into Software Engineering, Laurence has worked on a variety of backend, cloud and mobile projects in languages like Rust, Python, Go, Typescript and Kotlin. The excitement of learning and of how technology can be applied to solve real-world problems is what drives Laurence in his professional life.

Mapaseka Tsepe
Mapaseka Tsepe is a University of the Free State graduate, who studied a B.Sc Information Technology. She also has an Honours in Business Management (BSc) from the University of the Free State. Mapaseka joined the Contract Research Organisation (CRO) industry in 2007 and has 17 years of experience in data management. She has worked in various global/multinational Phase II – IV studies on various therapeutic areas (Infectious Diseases and Vaccines, Ophthalmology, Oncology, Pain, Immunology, Cardiovascular and Pediatrics). Mapaseka has fulfilled numerous roles within data management at large CROs, including Senior Clinical Data Associate, Clinical Data Associate, Associate Clinical Data Manager, Senior Clinical Data Coordinator and Clinical Data Coordinator. She has substantial experience in conducting data reviews, discrepancy management, generating data cleaning reports, freezing eCRFs, performing reconciliations, and working with study teams. In 2022, her team won the Clinical Project Team Award for best collaboration. Mapaseka brings almost two decades of clinical data management experience to the BioInformatiCo team, making her a valuable resource.

Dr Chloë Shain
Dr Chloë Shain has a PhD in Anthropology, a BA in Film and Media Production and a Bachelor of Social Science Honours in Anthropology from the University of Cape Town. She also has a BA Honours in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Chloë’s background includes social scientific and qualitative research, academic research, writing and editing, project management, public/community engagement, grant/funding scoping and art & design. Her PhD research involved long-term qualitative fieldwork with TB scientists inside a Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory. She has presented her academic research at local and international conferences and has been awarded prestigious academic scholarships and fellowships, including the National Research Foundation (NRF) Innovation and Priority Research Areas Scholarship.
Chloë has exhibited her artwork at Nirox, Latitudes Art Fair and Turbine Art Fair and has spearheaded art-science community engagement projects in collaboration with the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research, the SAMRC Centre for Tuberculosis Research, Stellenbosch University Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics, the South African TB Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) and the Western Cape Department of Education.

Pieter Rossouw
Pieter Rossouw has over ten years of backend and cloud engineering experience spanning financial services, regulatory technology, logistics, and agritech, with deep fluency across Python, Golang, and Java ecosystems.
He most recently led a Python team on a fully serverless debt review platform for an emerging bank, architected as a scalable event-driven serverless solution.
He is adept at building cloud-native platforms that reconcile business needs with considered technology adoption.
Pieter holds an MSc in Computer Science from North-West University, where he also lectured final-year IT students, and is a strong proponent of secure, privacy-conscious engineering in highly regulated environments.

Jamie Benater obtained her Electrical and Information Engineering degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and graduated at the end of 2022. Throughout her degree, she completed numerous projects relating to Big Data, artificial intelligence and communication systems.

Faatimah Mahomed qualified as an Electrical Engineer from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2023. During her engineering degree, Faatimah was awarded a prestigious bursary from the Power Grids Education Trust, aimed at uplifting and empowering Black South African women in STEM.

Priyanka Kala has completed her Biomedical Engineering degree (2021) followed by an Electrical (Information) Engineering honours degree (2023) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her honours project titled “Investigating Muscle Fatigue Using a Low-Cost EMG Armband: Towards a Low-Cost Bionic Hand” was recently published in the 2024 Proceedings of the Design of Medical Devices (DMD) Conference in the ASME digital collection. Andile Dube
Andile Dube is a skilled enrolled nurse trained at Lungile Nursing School. She has expertise in Good Clinical Practice, Data Management for Clinical Research, Microsoft Excel, and WHODrug and MedDRA coding. Andile has a background in clinical settings in the private sector, working in a COVID-19 ward where she provided direct patient care, administered medications, oxygen therapy and supported infection control measures. She also worked in a maternity ward, where she became proficient in antenatal, labour, and postnatal care, including patient education and supporting new mothers. Notably, Andile was a clinical case manager in the Sisonke clinical trial – the Ad26 COVID-19 Vaccine study which vaccinated 500,000 healthcare workers. Andile brings this wealth of experience in clinical settings to her role as an Associate Data Manager, making her sensitive to the clinical trial participant context.

Jamie Goldstein is a qualified Chartered Accountant (South Africa). After graduating, Jamie completed her articles at Ernst & Young, where she gained experience in both the retail and financial sectors. She has managed HR documentation and employee records across multiple operational sites, run leave administration and payroll support, and coordinated recruitment and employee onboarding from end to end. On the procurement side, she has processed supplier invoices, raised purchase requisitions, and kept compliance documentation and licence exemptions current. Her detailed, deadline-driven work has kept operations running without friction.

Professor Glenda Gray is a highly accomplished medical researcher and leader in the field. As the first female President and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), she brings a wealth of experience and expertise. Trained as a Medical Doctor and Paediatrician at the University of the Witwatersrand, Professor Gray co-founded and directed the renowned Perinatal HIV Research Unit at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Her international reputation stems from her groundbreaking research in HIV vaccines and interventions to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. She is a key figure in the expansion of HIV vaccine research in Africa as the Co-PI of the NIH-funded HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Professor Gray’s contributions have been recognised through numerous awards, including the Nelson Mandela Health and Human Rights Award and the Order of Mapungubwe, the highest honour in South Africa. Currently, Mark holds diverse private equity interests spanning sectors such as property, technology, education and financial services.
